Russia to boost troops level in Tajikistan: Putin

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said that more than 5,000 troops would be stationed in the country.

In October China reportedly moved over 30,000 troops near N Korean border and China has been urged to strengthen 2.5 million semi-military in Xinjiang. This will put 2.5 million Chinese semi-military troops up against the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

If China is playing in accord with Russia these new troop deployments are a serious attempt to draw a line.

Russia to boost troops level in Tajikistan: Putin

Posted: 17 October 2004 0817 hrs

DUSHANBE : Russia will increase the number of its troops in Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, to further stability in the region, Russian President Vladimir Putin said here Saturday.

Putin arrived in the central Asian country earlier Saturday to discuss security concerns with regional leaders.

During the talks the two countries agreed on a practically free lease by Russia for 49 years of a base where Russia's 201st military division will be stationed, as well as on the handover to Russia of the military space observation center at Nurek.

"A stable functioning (of the Russian base) and its build-up...will be the guarantee not only of Russia's investment (in the country) but also of stability in the entire region," said Putin.

He said that Russia was "determined to increase our military presence in Tajikistan".

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said that more than 5,000 troops would be stationed in the country.

The space center at Nurek will be handed over to Russia in exchange for the forgiveness of more than 240 million dollars of the nearly 300 million dollars which Dushanbe owes Moscow.

Putin also pledged Russian investments totaling two billion dollars over the next years, mainly in hydroelectric power and aluminium.

The Russian leader will meet the leaders of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan as Moscow tries to boost security cooperation in the Central Asian region, which has been at times overrun by Islamist-linked violence.

His visit follows a three-day trip to China where Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao signed a historic agreement on border demarcation.

Russia also obtained China's backing for its bid to join the World Trade Organisation. - AFP
