I actually have equipment out there that uses FM clicks -- phase reversal pops, or bursts -- that exist only at FM threshold. The purpose is to squelch satellite receivers in a threshold-expansion detector, and do it very accurately without requiring any pre-alignment. But that's more than you wanted to know.
