I'm a bit late to the discussion, but I just wanted to say a couple of things.

a) None of us know how this will all pan out.

and

b) People who currently have mortgages and/or car loans, etc. do not yet own these items free and clear, however, the lenders don't want them either. They just want to make money in exchange for someone realizing their dream a little earlier.
