Lee thanks for your comments. I sort of understand the fundamentals, but have difficulty with technicals. Technicals often seem like a Rorshoch test, people see different things in the same chart. I do understand the buy/sell supply/demand aspect and can believe that there can be common behaviors resulting in common price patterns as groups move in and out of stocks, but the elaborate formations some discuss are hard for me to believe. Bull flags and waves are credible behaviors to me The volume you mention appears to be key.

I think the fundamentals for energy companies remain strong, but the stocks have had a big run up and may need further short term consolidation. I am curious about what the charts tell you about my biggest holdings UPL, DVN, SLB, XOM. I have large core positions in these stocks, but will swing trade (3-10 day periods) long when they look particularly beaten up. In addition, I write covered calls against 10-50% of my core position after the stocks have made a big run up.
