Some politicians (some Democrats) support this point of view, but they would need a sufficiently large forcing function to get it through Congress - especially with all the special interest groups in the country trying to convince the average American that any tax increase at all would be a disaster for them.

By forcing function, I mean it will come down to a trade-off that involves suspension of critical services - or an increase in taxes. Different people have different hot buttons, but significant cuts in education, health care, police security, or others may be the right button to press to get the activists out in the streets yelling louder than the special interest groups.
