Man, it's just simple physics, the light may be able to pass the tubes but when the algae grows they absorb light and wont let it pass! and guess what algae needs energy to grow and that energy comes from light.
So even a 4th grader could understand that a lateral structure would have higher efficiency, you don't really need rocket science to figure that out!
