Re: so you pick what you want to believe but ignore other parts of the bible?
Yes, that's right, and I don't think it needs to be all black and white, that you must either believe every word, or none at all.
I think the point of the Bible is to impart some wisdom in terms of leading one's life in the pursuit of love, peace, and brotherhood. But some parts I just cannot relate to, and as apt as they may have been at one epoch of time, I can't see how they relate to life today. So as you put it, I ignore them, or at least do not attempt to put my own interpretation on them, because who knows what they were meant to mean 1000s of years ago...?
But that's just me. I think I live a good life, and I'm comfortable with my faith. I don't think people should pass judgment on me, without getting to know the totality of my beliefs and how I conduct my life, but who am I to stop anyone who wishes to do so....
Re: the god of the old testament seems to be a warmonger like chunga
I can't speak for chunga, but bottom line for me is that God = Love. You cannot justify war in the name of God, nor can you justify hate or violence. If I'm in support of dealing with Afghanistan, it's outside of my belief in God, but rather due to what I think might be the best policy for our country. I'm a firm believer that religion and national policy do not and should not coincide.
