It is always tough to design a newer, better, small molecule drug that is less water soluble so it doesn't pass though the kidneys as quickly vs adding too much alphatic moieties on to active portion of the drug that makes it hang around in the body too long leading to unwanted side effects. Most drugs aren't very good for you in a accumulative sense. If you take enough pills for a long enough time, side effects do occur.
I am sure PFE is redoubling their long term usage studies. I think Monsanto's GD Serle unit was many months ahead of MRK with Celerbrex's initial development. Maybe MRK rushed things trying to catch up.
