Hmmm, you mean like, you need a brokerage account approved for margin trading and a positive balance and/or marginable securities ? You don't need that much capital and we know that some of the longs here have millions of shares, so it's not exactly a stretch of the imagination to suppose that there could be retail shorters also with positions in the millions ...

And the bulk of the issue lies with institutional investors anyway, as a retail short you just stand between them and the wall they are running into : you'll just be collateral damage.
