Preparations for North Korea missile test detected The New York Times
Japan sent two destroyers and a surveillance plane to the Sea of Japan on Thursday, American and Japanese government officials said, after the United States and Japan detected signs that North Korea was preparing to test a ballistic missile capable of reaching Japan.
The North Korean newspaper Rodong Sinmun warned Japan that its military cooperation with the United States "would serve as a detonating fuse to turn Japan into a nuclear sea of fire," the official Korean Central News Agency reported.
The tensions surfaced on the day North Korea was to have taken part in a fourth round of talks intended to dismantle its nuclear weapons program. But North Korea has made it clear that it will not resume substantive talks until the American presidential election is decided.
