Fresh Protests In China's In Riot-hit Western Province

Several members of Han community in the Muslim region of Xinjiang in western China held demonstrations Thursday protesting a worsening security situation there.

About 2,000 Han Chinese flocked to the city center in the provincial capital, Urumqi, denouncing the regional government for not maintaining public order following a spate of needle attacks recently.

Hundreds of security personnel blocked them from marching on People's Square.

Urumqi witnessed serious ethnic violence two months ago, when Muslim minority Uighurs clashed with police and attacked members of Han majority.

More than 180 persons were killed and hundreds of others wounded in the clashes before Chinese government cracked it down.

The government says most of the dead in the worst ethnic unrest in China for decades were Han, but the exile activist group, the World Uighur Congress, claims many Uighurs were also killed.
