hard to comprehend why an attorney would take those chances.

The offending attorney may be referred to disciplinary counsel for violations of various disciplinary rules. Courts have also taken the position that undisclosed-ghost-writing is a violation of Rule 11 which requires that every pleading be signed by the attorney of record.
