The BIG problem faced by the Dems is simply that only about half the population bothers to vote -- a far lower percent than in Europe or Japan. The US electoral system is designed to keep voter participation low -- else election day would be a national holiday as it is in most other countries.

They could easily beat the Bushies if they offered a program that strongly appealed to this huge mass of non-voters. But the party is dominated by conservatives that would rather lose than propose programs (like removing the income cap for social security taxes) that would truly squeeze the dominant elites.
