Dr. Francis Collins, the scientist who led the team that deciphered our genetic code, has just been nominated to head the National Institutes of Health. Most reports describe Collins as an evangelical Christian, but in our interview from April, he calls himself non-denominational, saying, "I haven't noticed that there's all the much of a difference when you're on your knees in the church with other believers."
Collins grew up an agnostic, became an atheist, and then – just as his immersion in the scientific world was deepening – he became a Christian. His story is the reverse of popular stereotypes: science didn't destroy his faith, it strengthened it.
