Armenia, China Discuss Military Cooperation

Major General Jiang Lihua, deputy head of the Chinese Defense Ministry's Foreign Relations Department, met in Yerevan on 26 August with Armenian Defense Minister Serzh Sarkisian to discuss how to expand bilateral military cooperation, RFE/RL's Armenian Service reported. Sarkisian thanked Beijing for the assistance it has provided to the Armenian military. That aid includes the training in Chinese military academies of 10 Armenian military personnel. Sarkisian also announced that Armenian President Robert Kocharian will visit China in September. LF

Armenia is a little country getting a lot of attention.

Note, in 1997, Armenia and Russia signed a friendship treaty, under which they provided for mutual assistance in the event of a military threat to either party. The pact also allows Russian border guards to patrol Armenia’s frontiers with Turkey and Iran.

Russia intends to begin re-equipping the 102nd Military Base in Armenia, said Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov in a press conference yesterday. At the same time, he said that a serious build-up will not take place. 'The supplying of weapons to the base will have an exclusively defensive character and will not destabilize the situation in the region,' said Ivanov. - 13:20 2003-11-12

Along with China and Russia, Bush also wants Armenia. Look for Bush to keep troops in Iraq and a concentrated effort to bring Armenia under U.S. dominance thus securing Iran’s northern border. The Azerbaijani media is speculating the same. Reno Harnish, the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, has dismissed reports by some Azerbaijani media on a possible US attack on Iran.
