My guess is they hoped to bury this story by letting it out right before the convention. This story is yet another huge embarrassment for the Busheviks, or it would be if they had any integrity or honor.

Also like the Plame investigation, there is only so far they can suppress the story when it is so far along.

Lots of time before the election for these and so many other huge scandals to bubble up and bite the Republicrooks.
