Freedom Fuels construction progresses
By JOHN SKIPPER, of The Globe Gazette
MASON CITY — Freedom Fuels LLC, the new bio-diesel plant under construction on the western edge of Mason City, will be ready to open in March, its top official said today.

“Construction is coming along pretty darn good,” said Ed Dannen, president of Freedom Fuels, home-based in Hampton.

The exterior of the main building is just about complete — always a goal before winter sets in — and four 500,000 gallon holding tanks are in place behind the main building, he said.

When work is complete, there will be six tanks, said Dannen, plus an administration building.

“We’re finishing putting all of the pieces in place, tying vessels to pumps and things like that. We’ve hit a few speed bumps along the way, like you always do, but we’re pretty much ready to crank it up on schedule,” he said.

The $44 million plant is on a 42-acre tract near 19th Street Southwest and Eisenhower Avenue.

The plant will process soy oil into an estimated 30-million gallons of biodiesel each year and produce glycerine, a product used in soaps and laundry products.
