Yeah I know what you mean. It's natural to think that those who are "on top" are smarter, stronger, better.. We all tend to think of things this way. "Wow! He drives a Rolls Royce and has a big house, he must be smart and powerful!" The reality is that engineers, scientists, and those of us who actually use our brains for a living do not make a lot of money. My brother in law has a science PhD from Harvard, but I make a hell of a lot more than he ever did and I'm a computer programmer with no degree.
Sales is the #1 profession because to be good at it usually requires lying to people. That's what these guys allegedly were doing. They will probably go to prison now because they got their money without earning it legally. That's not smart, it's outside the rules.
