Cephalon to accelerate application for ADHD drug

NEW YORK, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Cephalon Inc. (NasdaqNM:CEPH - News) said on Thursday that a late-stage trial of a once-daily dosage of its modafinil drug significantly improved symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents.
Based on the results of the Phase III trial, the company plans to accelerate its application to U.S. regulators to market the drug to the fourth quarter of 2004 from the first quarter of 2005.

Modafinil, sold under the brand name Provigil, is currently sold as a treatment for excessive sleepiness associated with narcolepsy. As a treatment for ADHD in children and adolescents, it would be manufactured as a smaller, film-coated tablet in unique dosage strengths.
