Washington, DC – February 14, 2002 – Multispectral Solutions, Inc. (MSSI), a privately held company and industry leader in the development of ultra wideband (UWB) components and systems for communications, radar and precision geolocation, applauds the action taken today by the Federal Communications Commission to adopt a First Report and Order allowing the commercialization of UWB technology.

"For the past 3 years, MSSI has worked aggressively in support of a rule making that protects existing spectrum users while ensuring the future commercial success of our UWB technology," stated Dr. Robert J. Fontana, MSSI President and CEO. "Today, we are very pleased with the initial steps taken by the FCC, and look forward to the rapid introduction of our commercial products and the establishment of additional license agreements for our patented UWB designs."

The Commissioners stated that the adopted standards were based, in large part, upon recommendations provided to the FCC by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the agency responsible for the protection of spectrum utilized by the government and military. The new rules for unlicensed UWB operation will permit the introduction of imaging, vehicular radar, communications and measurement systems.

Under the new rules, UWB communications devices will be restricted to intentional operation only between 3.1 and 10.6 GHz; through-wall imaging and surveillance systems restricted between 1.99 and 10.6 GHz (and used only for law enforcement, fire and rescue, and other designated organizations) and automotive radars restricted to frequencies above 24.075 GHz. Initial communications applications are further restricted to tethered operations indoor, or to lower out-of-band emissions, outdoor hand-held use.

Founded in 1989, MSSI has pioneered the development of advanced UWB systems for the U.S. government and military. Applications have included high-speed communications; low cost, high resolution radar; and precision tagging and geolocation. MSSI’s patented designs permit high performance wireless operation for applications that cannot be met with conventional wireless designs such as spread spectrum.
