Spit test shows promise in diagnosing, monitoring diabetes
In a small study presented at the AACE meeting, scientists examined the saliva of 40 patients, trying to pinpoint biomarkers that indicate the presence of diabetes. A third of the patients had diabetes, a third had prediabetes and a third were clinically healthy. The researchers' goal was to characterize proteins in human saliva that indicated prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, said Srinivasa Nagalla, adjunct associate professor of pediatrics at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.
