This is from a recent WSJ article about purchased rights to water from the Colorado River (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123741925013178161.html ):

Shell does not expect to need large quantities of water for at least 15 years… and by then it may have developed less water-intensive ways to extract oil, perhaps using wind power.
