The Air Force is interested in developing Intevac's LIVAR system for a highly classified missile-detection project called the System for Airborne Laser Sensing and Analysis (SALSA). The four-year contract has a potential value of $22 million if Congress approves the yearly allocations.
"It's a good stamp of approval for our LIVAR system," says Intevac Chief Executive Officer Kevin Fairbairn. LIVAR stands for laser illuminated viewing and ranging.
The money primarily is earmarked to ramp up production of the existing LIVAR system, Mr. Fairbairn says, although the Air Force may ask for some modifications in the future.
The military is studying whether to use Intevac on everything from jet fighters to tanks to ordinary infantrymen, Air Force officials say.
The LIVAR system is slated to be used for an anti-missile system that involves Lockheed-Martin, Northrop Grumman and Boeing. The goal of the still-classified project would be to use lasers to shoot ballistic missiles out of the sky shortly after they've been launched.
