Dan3, it is not that I disagree with the conclusion that Netburst is a dead end. I long thought that Intel would be better off basing future x86 designs on Dothan derivatives.

However, that article does make a good argument that Intel can nurse Prescott/Nocona past its current heat & throttling issues through relatively minor adjustments in heat sink and fan characteristics. In this case, a BIOS change which puts in better fan speed threshholds.

I do agree that Intel has a problem. I also think that they will sell a lot of Prescotts anyway using solutions which most business owners won't mind. (Also remember that the sweet spot in desktop sales is several speed grades under the high end - that sweet spot will be kept to reasonable operating temperatures with standard cooling.)

Actually, this is all more beneficial for AMD than it is hurtful for Intel. AMD will command the high end of the x86 market for quite some time. This will do wonders for AMD's ASPs and margins. Intel will own the middle and do just fine there.
