You are NOT a fool, sir. You are absolutely right when you say that Peter must sell if Paul is to buy. I, too, puzzled over this very question until another inestimable Axis investor 'splained it to me some months ago. Thank you, Scardeecat!
The confusion arises when we characterize some transactions as "buys" while others are "sells". Then we have a day like today in Axis when up to closing time all transactions were "buys". How can that be?
When we use the terms "buy" and "sell" in this context, we are merely describing transactions that paid the "ask" price as a "buy". Those that were priced lower than the "ask" are "sells".
But make no mistake, every transaction has a buyer and a seller. Today's Axis volume was 82,000 shares. 82,000 shares were bought and the same 82,000 were sold.
