Free market capitalism is the single greatest economic system ever devised. It has lifted billions out of misery through growth and prosperity. However, it is not perfect. When you live in a free and open society, you will always have scoundrels like Bernie Madoff around to take advantage of others.

I'm glad to see he went straight to jail. Guys like this ought to spend the rest of their lives in prison because of the ruin they leave behind. It's not the equivalent of murder, but he has destroyed many lives, so life imprisonment is the only punishment for this guy.
