He's genuinely sorry he outlived the funds in the account.

Also seems unlikely that you could work full time for a mutual fund that made zero investments and not know what was going on. Madoff wants to bear the full brunt of it and let his wife and (fund employee) offspring carry on with life as usual, spending the money he stole over the years.
