The priorities of the United States in its relationship with China are to salvage the world’s economy and to combat global warming. Hilary Clinton, the new US Secretary of State, made it clear this weekend that human rights are bottom on her list of priorities. She came to China to gain the country’s confidence. Her hosts are waiting to see what will happen after Barack Obama’s inauguration.
There is no Obama-fever in Beijing, especially since the new US Minister of Finance accused China of ‘manipulating’ the value of the Chinese currency.

Clinton pleaded with Beijing to keep investing in US government bonds. Clinton said that ‘together we shall crash or together we shall grow. Luckily, we are heading in the same direction.’
