I'm not sure what arrangements they have for their internet connection. No idea how it works when it gets up to that level and amount of bandwidth.

I also don't know what the infrastructure looks like for SI anymore, but I would guess that SI Jeff and John Busby are the only people in the whole company whose job is 100% SI. So not a whole lot of direct employee expense. Perhaps some ad sales, customer support, and programming people for whom SI-related stuff is one of many hats they wear. And where INSP is concerned, the cost of employee hours spent on SI isn't attributable to SI itself. They're all "corporate" hours. <g> So it costs them practically nothing in terms of employees to run SI, even if in reality it costs them a lot.

My suspicion isn't so much that INSP will just suddenly decide to shut down SI (although I see it as a distinct possibility); it's that INSP itself will go into receivership and everyone will be let go and everything sold at firesale prices. Including the hardware used to run SI. Might be able to pick up the name and the database (the code does me no good) at a decent price.
