[OT] One problem with MtM accounting is that it’s not applied uniformly to different financial companies. For instance, GE Capital, which is not regulated as a bank, does not have to use MtM on its large portfolio of commercial mortgages because these loans are classified as held to maturity. If the same loans were on the balance sheet of BAC or C, they might be subject to drastic writedowns under MtM.
