CANATUAN, Philippines—The death toll is daunting, but the Canadians refuse to give up their gold claim.

Fifteen people have been gunned down so far in this remote jungle strip, victims of a feud that has all the elements of a David and Goliath battle: indigenous peoples claiming legal title to their ancestral lands, pitted against a Canadian multinational bulldozing a sacred mountain.
