eagle, could settle for different, but have seen over time, your replies as that one .. anyway ..
yep, we built our successful economies on protectionism, tariffs, other methods .. in the days of spinning wheels if you died in England you had to be buried in a shroud made English linen .. and then our more developed economies denied and deny the some protectionism to poor countries .. it has been take take take ..
Now however it is a different world so much toward a car for example is done in many countries, etc etc you know.
At this time i disagree with you, and don't think a concern about protectionism is ignorant.
Nations 'must resist protectionism' to combat economic crisis ABC - January 30, 2009
Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has used a speech at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland to urge world leaders to work together to overcome the global financial crisis.
Ms Gillard spoke about the importance of countries not turning inwards during the crisis.
"Every time the World Economic Forum meets it is an important occasion," she said.
"But this year's meeting promises to be an event of even greater significance.
"We know that throughout the world this crisis [gloabal financial crisis] is imposing a burden on many millions of hard-working people," she said.
"[People] who played no part in the making of the crisis but will feel its effects through the loss of a job, or the loss of a home, or the loss of the resources needed for a decent retirement.
"For them there will be a temptation to turn inwards, to turn away from globalisation, to try and seek refuge away from the storm.
"But every nation across the globe must resist this temptation to find comfort in protectionism, to act alone rather than in concert.
"And this temptation must also be resisted by corporations which must not retreat from foreign trade and investment for the illusion of security at home."
She told the forum governments need to stimulate their economies in a way that increases productivity and builds a greener world.
"As we emerge from the global financial crisis, we need a new era of global cooperation," she said.
"We need to stimulate our economies in a way that will make us stronger and better able to withstand future challenges.
"We need to stimulate our economies in a way that will increase productivity and build a greener world.
"We need to rebuild trust in our institutions and confidence in our economies."
Ms Gillard told the forum that like other nations across the globe, Australia is feeling the reverberations of the global financial crisis.
"The Australian Government is acting quickly and decisively with that objective - the building of a stronger and fairer future - firmly in our sights," she said.
"But we are a resilient nation and a resilient people.
"And we come to this new challenge with many remarkable strengths."
