An exchange IS the cancellation of the old shares, in exchange for giving you new ones. Try hanging onto the old shares in such a case, see if they are worth anything other than zero.
Perhaps you missed the part where the SEC says: "The new shares may be fewer in number and may be worth less than your old shares."
Or the part where the SEC says: "Chapter 11 provides a process for rehabilitating the company's faltering business. Sometimes the company successfully works out a plan to return to profitability; sometimes, in the end, it liquidates."
