House approves slot machines -- The state House approved early this morning an "historic'' expansion of legalized gambling in Pennsylvania -- a bill that would create 14 casinos, with thousands of slot machines at racetracks, stand-alone venues and resort hotels After nearly nine hours of emotional, sometimes angry rhetoric, the House voted 113-88 to put as many as 61,000 slot machines around the state. The House also adopted a companion measure using slots revenue for property tax relief. Gov. Ed Rendell hailed the action as "a good example of government working for the people."
