Yep, 'community'. It's nice hearing from the world, but even online, I don't run into too many people that live within the same mile radius as the local BBSes. I've been to many local system's gatherings from 1983 til around 1992 or maybe 1993. We used to have annual multi-system picnics, movie outings, trips to the city and just local hangs at people's houses. Around 1986 or so there were many local ddials and there was always impromptu gatherings going on. Those were the days we were able to pull ourselves away from the computers LOL. We had to call up each individual system and hope it wasn't busy.

I never got into TDBS, I only used the single line system. Even with the 2 line version, I still only had one modem access, but with that version, I was also allowed to be online at the same time as the other user. When Karl Schmidt and I worked on creating XMODEM for the Vic-20 and then C=64, we thought the 'new' 1200 modems were the greatest! 4 times the speed as our 300s LOL. Ah, those were the days. Rare to run into people on the net that were there.

When there were 16, then 64, modem line TBBS systems around, and ddials that had 7 people, plus could have 6, then a link to another ddial, we were linking people in chat rooms and thought that was the ultimate. Then the net came out.. and now everyone and their brother is online. I remember 9+ years ago I had to explain what computers and modems in the home WERE. "A MO-What? modem, M. O. D. E. M. Oh... and what do you do with it? It connects the computer to another. Computer? You have a computer in the home? What would you use a computer for?"

Back then, ONLINE didn't come to YOU, you had to first be interested in owning a computer, then you needed to know about the online world, which was usually word of mouth. If not for the few who I knew that got me into it, I'd never have found it myself. Now EVERYONE is online.

I remember when web pages were by PEOPLE, not money grubbing institutions and quick rich schemes. I remember emails from people, not automated robots trying to either make money off you, or rip you off.

Our joemoney was Joe O'Brien.

And I don't think we opened the doors... I think we were invaded. They saw dollar signs. Hobbiests just got pushed aside.
