John talked me into it a few years ago basically the same way. By showing me how easily it fetches pages from the web and parses them. If I remember correctly, its most popular use is for parsing text files, whether they came from the web or not.

If you decide to go with PERL, you're welcome to most of the source code I've written, and if we can ever get John in here, he's a great resource.
