MOSCOW, June 26 (Itar-Tass) - Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov said after meeting Prvoslav Davinic, the defence minister of Serbia & Montenegro, on Saturday that Russia was ready to maintain and develop military and technical cooperation with Serbia & Montenegro.
The Russian minister expressed the hope that the two countries and peoples would continue to deepen and strengthen their traditional friendly ties.
The Russian Defence Ministry’s press secretary, Vyacheslav Sedov, told Itar-Tass that the two defence ministers had discussed the state and prospects for developing cooperation in military and technical spheres and the situation in the Balkans, including Kosovo.
Prvoslav Davinic, who is paying a short working visit to Russia, has also met Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Ivanov, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Mikhail Dmitriyev, the head of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation.
The lifting of the U.N.-imposed anti-Yugoslav sanctions in 2001 removed all the international and legal barriers for the development of military and technical ties between Moscow and Belgrade. This concerns both the supply of modern Russian hardware and the repairs and modernization by Russian experts of Soviet-made weapons and equipment that is in service with the Serb army, a Russian Defence Ministry source stressed.
