The Same could be said for Al Gore and in the previous election, Bill Clinton.

I'm still concerned that if a viable 3rd or 4th party develops enough following, that someone could win the election with as little as 35% of the vote. The chances of electing a really extremist candidate would greatly increase. I'd like to see us set up some provision for a runoff election of the top 2 finishers, if no one wins a majority of the popular vote (in other words, two tiered criteria, must win majority of BOTH electoral and popular votes). This would have required Gore and Bush to face off in a deciding election that would be determined by the electoral college, and spared the state and supreme courts from being arbiters.
