Fred - they are not likely to be saying 'we must find a partner because we can't afford to take it through to approval and marketing on our own'. Talking big by saying that we'll fund the trials ourselves out of external revenues makes for a better negotiating stance when doing the partnership deal. The number of patients that the FDA would require for a Phase 3 Insulin trial would make the costs prohibitive imho. And may I remind you that Biodel's go-it-alone Phase 3 trial ended in failure. Of course I may be proven wrong if they manage to do another Roche type deal with a big upfront payment. But other than that I don't see the future cash-flow from Roche & Baxter coming in fast enough to fund the internal programs through to marketing.
