IMO if kind of up to the person doing the chart...

abc is usually for 3 waves
abcde is usually for triangle
i ii .... are sub waves

look at this 90 minute chart from here http://www.yelnick.typepad.com/

he does not even lable the ending diagonal triange abcde lol but he does label the legs of the triange abc
