True, we do tend to define ourselves by stuff... or McStuff as I've heard it termed, but even if your old TV works the newer one will save on energy. So there's at least a substantial reason for upgrading along with the more psychological ones.

I knew TV signals were going digital, and I've heard reasons for it, namely the more efficient use of bandwidth... It frees up space for other uses. I guess I hadn't been aware that they were all supposed to be HD as well? I don't know if that was you who said it but someone did. I think it was a misstatement.
