President Bush has insisted that Saddam Hussein had connections with the al-Qaida terrorist network, despite findings by the September 11 commission that there was no credible evidence of such a link.
President Bush told reporters today that his administration never said Iraq was directly involved in the September 11 plot. But he said Saddam's ties to terrorists were well known, and there were many "contacts" between al-Qaida and the former Iraqi leader.
His comments come a day after the independent commission investigating the attacks concluded no evidence exists that al-Qaida had strong ties to Saddam.
The New York Times today called on President Bush to apologize for what it calls his "plainly dishonest" effort to link the war in Iraq with the war on terror.
