Could it be that CRP had nothing to do with it - i.e. that Crestor's efficacy was due to simply lowering LDL to an even safer level? Many now advise reducing LDL to below 70. Only below about 70 does the amount of plaque actually decrease rather than increase more slowly.

It is theoretically possible - but the the trials to test the efficacy of such a change in ldl have efficacy nowhere near 44%. That plus a bunch of other data (and there is a LOT!) about statins and whether their efficacy comes through crp or ldl says that it is vastly more likely that the obvious reading of Jupiter is the correct one.
