TEHRAN, June 15 (AFP) - Iran's navy has seized another fishing boat and its crew from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) amid an escalating spate of similar incidents in Gulf waters, the Arabic-language channel of Iranian state television reported Tuesday.
Quoting Revolutionary Guards navy commander Mohammad Rahim Dehghan, Al-Alam television said the boat and its five crew members were captured near Siri, an Iranian island between Iran and the UAE.
The channel showed television images of the seized boat. On Sunday, the channel said six fishing boats from the UAE and their 23 crew were seized while they were fishing near the Iranian island of Qeshm, situated just a few kilometers (miles) off the Iranian mainland and near the Strait of Hormuz.
The satellite news station said they have now been handed over to the local judiciary. No further details were immediately available.
The reports come just a week after an Iranian fishing boat and its crew were seized and detained by a UAE naval vessel in Gulf waters, prompting the Iranian foreign ministry to accuse the UAE of "unacceptable" behaviour.
Iran had claimed the UAE navy vessel had entered Iranian waters around the disputed Gulf island of Abu Musa, but the UAE's coastguard in turn said the Iranians had entered UAE territorial waters.
The Iranian state news agency IRNA then carried a report suggesting the Iranians may have been fatigued and drifted too close to Dubai.
Iran has regular disputes with the UAE over the Iranian-held islands of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs, which are situated roughly half-way between Iran and the Emirates.
The UAE claims ownership of the islands, controlled by Iran since British forces withdrew from the Gulf in 1971. Iran is also locked in a spat with Qatar. IRNA reported Sunday that the foreign ministry had summoned Qatar's ambassador to protest over an alleged fatal attack on an Iranian boat by a Qatari naval vessel in the Gulf.
