When I see articles like this, it always seems that the media is trying to paint 'survivalists' as tin foil hatters.
I really don't consider myself a survivalist, just prudent.
Are there any good reasons you can think of why every household shouldn't keep extra food in? Simply, if there is a problem (natural disaster, electric outage, job loss, etc.) then you don't have to worry about feeding yourself and your family. Even if there isn't a problem, it still means that you don't have to go shopping every minute for food.
When you know you have enough food to last for months or years, there is a feeling of relief and contentment too.
I tell people this all the time. Instead of going to the store and just buying what you need for that week, buy extra and put them away. Put the date on with a marker when you bought it too. Before you know it, you will have a good supply put away. The time saved from shopping can then be spent with your family or hobbies or whatever.
If you plan ahead, it's always worth the extra effort.
