Dell rep on Opteron

Terry Klein, vice president of Dell's Advanced Systems Group in the Americas, said in an interview with eWEEK last month that customers are looking to Itanium—rather than Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s Opteron processor—when considering 64-bit computing.

"A lot of accounts are asking us [about Opteron], but we've seen only a handful of accounts buying Opteron," Klein said. "It's a conversation [topic]."

With less than 2% markethare, the point where Dell has to adopt Opteron certainly hasn´t been reached yet, that´s not even close. We´d need pretty steep growth rates from here to reach that point. The most popular design for businesses, a 2U 2-way Opteron server (as Dirk Meyer has also stressed), has not been announced by any first tier OEM. I wonder how long that will take. And why has Newisys not done that? It should have been pretty easy for them.
