Inre my hypothesis that once an HCV infection becomes chronic it has, by definition, genetically mutated in a way specific to the particular individual infected. So without something to tune the immune system to the virus it would seem likely that relapse would be common.

Maybe the very fact of disruption of the virus will kick in the immune system. Do the individual drugs cause an elevation of ALT (that seems to go with effectual immune recognition of the virus)?
