I don't know, frankly I'm stupefied by my ignorance. Everyday I wake up and try to increase my knowledge and in doing this I learn that I can never even hope know it all, and can only hope to know a small fraction from our history, present day and potential future. We live in an amazing time. The near sum total of man's knowledge is right here at my fingertips if I'm willing to look for it, what an amazing tool the internet/intranet is. There was a time in my life when I thought I'd have eternity to learn all history, know all people (famous and no so famous), have all of my questions answered as to life on other planets, is there a Bigfoot, have aliens landed on earth, how did Noah fit millions of animals including dinosaurs on the ark, what happened to Jimmy Hoffa, who killed JFK...you get the idea. Well, I had to come to the realization that this life is all we have, and that wishful thinking's byproduct is only ephemeral hope.
There was another 'Jesus story' right at the same time as Jesus, but I can't remember his name. Same 12 disciples, lots of witnesses, etc etc. In the New Testament era there were a plethora of Prophets, Jesus naturally warns against them often in the New Testament. I will try and find his name for you. In the meantime I can offer up 'Horus' who predates Jesus by thousands of years. He was born of a virgin, became a Prophet at age 12, was baptized at age 30 by a man who was later beheaded, had 12 disciples, exorcised demons, performed miracles, was crucified and arose 3 days later. Here is a more informative short video on Horus. If you'd like text, let me know, or just Google "the story of Horus"
I find that Christians like to talk about 'truth'. Yet, I find that most of them won't look for truth anywhere but the Bible. If your mission in life is to seek the truth, then you must seek it where ever you can find it. If your mission in life is to be happy, content and satisfied with what you now know, then you really need look no further than the Bible, but then you can't refer to it as 'truth' if you're unwilling to examine the evidence :) I think this is what bothers many a secular person with regard to Christians and all other monotheistic religions. This is where 'arrogance' insinuations are born in my opinion. Personally, I love the writings of King Solomon. The book of Proverbs contains an amazing amount of wisdom, and as literary works both Proverbs and the Songs of Solomon, along with a good deal of the Bible are amazing literary works that should be required reading, but not taken literally as 'real'. Solomon said (loosely) 'Something may sound correct, until the other side is heard'.
There is scant little empirical evidence to suggest that Jesus as a man even existed, so I don't think he needs to be pigeon holed as a lunatic, or God's son. I've come to believe through research that he's probably a mosaic figure made up of what (at the time) everyone thought were good and honourable attributes. Times change however, and many of the things written in the New Testament are outright disgusting viewed through a modern lense. Here are a few examples below.
Cheers
Either Jesus is who he says he is, or he is a lunatic
