nwsun -- what irretrievably broke it for me from the very start (and I'm talking when I was maybe 3 or 4, before kindergarten) was the thing that my friends whose families went to one of the Protestant churches up the street, worshipping the same god based on the same prophet and scriptures, were damned to hell by this god simply because they didn't attend our church
to me, from the first time I heard and comprehended that thought, that's just ridiculous, arbitrary, cruel, no possible excuse for it -- if he's out there and that's the way he is, well, he's just gonna have to make do without my worship -- he's gonna have to do better than that
