It looks like the Thermofocus has been used in biological laboratories to test animal temperatures. This is part of an article from FASEB (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Animals
Mice were handled according to European Union and National rules. WT and TTR KO mice (7),
in the 129/Sv background, bred separately, and TTR KO and WT littermate offspring of
heterozygote breeding pairs were maintained at 24 ± 1°C under a 12 h light/dark cycle and fed
regular chow and tap water ad libitum. Unless otherwise stated, comparisons comprised groups
of 6 animals of each genotype, age- and sex-matched. All animals were accustomed to regular
handling. Mouse core body temperature was measured in the tail base, using a thermofocus
infrared thermometer [Tecnimed, Varese, Italy, (8)].
